Student Officer, Jacob Bavin

Student Officers have no pre-defined portfolio, but together with the rest of the elected executive committee, will discuss and propose areas of work for the Union, ensuring that all students are represented. Alongside representing student views generally, Student Officer's chosen areas of work will be defined via their manifesto promises.

You can contact student officers to give voice to feedback about any area of your student experience, to ask questions about any area of the Union's work or to provide them information that you feel will allow the Union to provide for student need.

More about Jacob:

What did/do you study?

I am currently studying Primary Education with QTS at the University of Winchester.

What SU run events and activities have you been a part of?

I have been really fortunate to be part of many interesting events and activities in the Student Union, like Stars, One Winchester, the Officer Review Panel and Student Experience Collaborator. Now, I am excited to be one of the Student Officer for the Student Union!

What are your top Manifesto points?

Commuters : I want to continue promoting the commuters lounge, whilst working alongside the Commuting Student Network. In addition, I will work with timetabling on scheduling multiple seminars and lectures in a day to enhance the university experience. Finally, organise regular welfare support and specific events to support and recognise our commuting community and potentially propose a dedicated parking lot for commuters on-site.

Disability : As a deaf individual, I often feel different, and I want to use my experiences to support others. My goal is to work with Student Disability Teams and Student Union to make events and services accessible for everyone and celebrate different disabilities each month to build a stronger community.

Education : I will strive to continue addressing issues our peers bring up and work on making it easier for everyone to share their feedback.

Welfare : University life is awesome, but it can be tough sometimes, so I really want to help out students who might be feeling overwhelmed. I would like to propose a dedicated space in the Student Union for students feeling overwhelmed or homesick. Finally, I want to suggest the Student Union and University to create ‘treat boxes’ for students on placements to show support and remind them they are not alone.

What made you run in the Elections to become an officer?

I wanted to run in the Elections to become an officer because I have always been a very approachable, open-minded and confident person and I am always wanting to ensure that all Students are able to be heard, empowered and have equal accessibilities for opportunities provided by the Student Union. I feel that I would be able to represent Student's views and bring fresh ideas for an awesome Student Life!

What’s your favourite thing about Winchester?

The thing I love about Winchester is its rich history. If the weather is nice and I have some free time, I will sometimes walk down the old streets to the Cathedral.

What has been your proudest moment during your student journey (so far)?

WOW! That's a tough question - there are so many things that I have been proud of during my Student Journey. I could say my proudest moment is completing my School Placement last year and of course being elected as Student Officer for the Student Union!

What do you like doing when you aren’t being a Winchester SU Officer?

I have a strong enthusiasm for history, particularly in the area of family genealogy. Presently, I am engaged in researching my family history.

What's your favourite film?

It is too hard to give just one because they are all too good to choose, but I would say my top 3 favourite film have to be Mamma Mia, The Imitation Game and The Man in the Iron Mask.
