As this academic year comes to a close, I think all of us can safely say we had far from the year in office we expected to have when we originally ran in the elections last year.

This year has been a rollercoaster for us all, with the common thread of a pandemic affecting us all in ways we never would have imagined a year ago. From a student officer perspective this has meant a full stop to most of our goals and plans. Even with this I feel like I have gained so much from my time as a student officer, like the experience of attending various meetings on behalf of and with the student union. The ability to accept that things can’t always go the way you want to or plan, and to make the best of anything the world might throw at you.

I am proud of what the student union has gotten done this year too. Whilst this year has been anything but normal, the union and our amazing sabbatical officers have worked tirelessly to do anything possible to support our students, both in the more visible areas of student experience as well as behind the scenes, and this effort has not gone unnoticed! Furthermore, I am immensely proud of our student body for speaking up for themselves, and to be part of a group of university students who will only accept what they feel like they deserve.

With my third year ahead of me I can’t wait to see what the new elected officers have in store for us all, and I will be crossing my fingers for them and the rest of my fellow students for an exciting and fun-filled year ahead!
