This week is UK Race Equality Week and at Winchester Student Union we want to encourage our members to get involved and to highlight the work we already do towards race equality. Below you can find some more information about Race Equality Week, information about what your Student Union does to promote equality, as well as more information on how you can get involved.

What is Race Equality Week?

Race Equality Week is a nationwide event taking place from the 6-12th February this year. Organised by the Race Equality Matters movement, it aims to address barriers to race equality. It is a week for action, reflection and awareness about race inequality and how to address it.

Is there a theme?

This year’s theme is #ItsEveryonesBusiness, because tackling race inequality is a collective responsibility, and therefore should be everyone’s business. Alongside this Race Equality Matters places a strong emphasis on action and change. Without action, there will be no change, and your commitment is measured by actions not words.

What does Winchester Student Union do to promote race equality?

Your Student Union takes a proactive approach to promoting race equality. Our One Winchester platform provides our members with a variety of resources to promote inclusion, cohesion, and an awareness that racial inequality still exists. We encourage students to engage with our existing resources, as well as to share resources they found helpful so that others can benefit from them.

Back in Black History Month, we undertook work to highlight Black voices, sharing figures from our community, pledges, and allyship information. All this information can be found on the One Winchester Black Community page – year-round to ensure we are continually working towards racial equality.

How can I be an ally?

Educate yourself! We have resources on inclusion, allyship and lots more. Become an active bystander and use action to drive change.

Even better, get involved with Race Equality Matters’ 5 Day Challenge. 5 challenges, for 5 minutes, over 5 days. This challenge involves daily 5-minute activities to help you reflect and take action to drive Race Equality. You can find out more here.
