Winchester Student Union is in the Top 10 Students’ Unions in the country!
We are so excited to announce that, thanks to the incredible work of Team SU, Winchester Student Union has scored within the Top 10 students’ unions in the UK in this academic year’s NSS.
What is the NSS?
The National Student Survey, or NSS, is a high-profile annual census of nearly half a million students across the UK. The NSS is completed by final year students to assess their whole higher education experience, and through analysis of their responses it helps universities ensure that the needs of current and future students are met.
Along with broad ranging questions about the quality of learning opportunities, academic support and learning resources, the NSS includes asking final year students how well they believe their students’ union represents their academic interests.
How did we do?
Year on year Winchester Student Union performs commendably against this question, with our scored responses consistently ranking above the sector average, but we are delighted to announce that our hard work to represent student voice and the academic interests of our members has resulted in a ranking that places us 7th across all Universities/Higher Education Institutions in the UK. We cannot describe how grateful we are to have received such an incredible score.
Why did we do so well?
Our score is likely a culmination of a number of our areas of work and it’s impossible to know exactly which areas led us to achieve the score we did, but looking back over the last year, it is so evident that the Union Staff and Executive Committee did a brilliant job empowering and representing students in all sorts of ways, including the following:
- Our hugely successful Student Academic Reps (StARs scheme) which this year saw a record recruitment of nearly 700 StARs, meaning nearly 9% of the student body at Winchester are StARs; this year we achieved our strategic goal of training 70% of our StARs
- Our dedicated Student Union Advice Centre which provides free, independent academic support and advice
- Our yearround work enhancing the ways we represent students’ academic interests and awareness-raising via in class presentations, videos and collaborative work with programme teams
- Working with the University on the No Detriment Policy
- Passing the final hurdles to put a SelfCertification Policy for Extenuating Circumstances in place
- The introduction of a new Student Voice Assistant role to work directly with the Vice President, Education & Welfare to support and enhance our representation of students’ academic interests.
- Brand new semesterly SSLC Reports to ensure key academic issues and themes from StudentStaff Liaison Committees are identified, escalated to a higher level, and fed back to our members to close the feedback loop
- Embedding our work in this area at multiple levels across the Union, including into our strategic aims
- Working to support and encourage students in rent rebates

We cannot express how proud we are to be entering into a Student Union that so clearly cares about, fights for and representing their students with every fibre of it’s being! We have been given an incredible opportunity to continue to grow and build on the work that has already been done, and we remain so driven to keep working for you, the Students at the University of Winchester.
