January Student Newsletter 2026

Friday 16-01-2026 - 21:05

A huge welcome back from us here at the Students' Union. We hope that somewhere along the way you have been able to find some time to wind down after a busy Term 1 and Assessment Period. Term 2 is my favourite part of the Academic Year, ultimately as, once we've gotten out the 200 days of January, it starts to get lighter, warmer and we have so much on offer. We can't wait to see what Term 2 brings and look forward to seeing you all throughout the year.

Alex Wilson - President of Winchester Student's Union 2024 - 2026.

Give it a Go Week – Term 2

During the first week of term, 19th January to 25th January, we will be running our Term 2 Give it a Go week. This is your opportunity for you to try out our different Activity Groups (sports Teams, societies and representational networks) before you decide to join them.

Information on what sessions will be running can be found here.

Your go-to spot, The Terrace

The Terrace reopens on Monday 19th January, and we’ve got River Coffee hot drinks to look forward to, a new treat-size coffee that won’t break the bank, and our new local loyalty scheme – freebies included!

Every penny you spend here goes straight back into your student experience. From funding activity groups and running night events like BOP, to wellbeing initiatives and student voice work, supporting our services makes a real difference on campus.

Find your Housemate

Winton 2026

Winton Weekend this year falls on the 14th to 15th February 2026, with another year of tradition and celebrations, and of course ... allowing our Alfies to come back and try their luck against their successors!

The tradition started 34 years, with the first of an annual memorial rugby match in memory of Steve Tomlinson. Ever since that first homecoming of players, the weekend has become bigger with graduates making their way back to Winch to challenge their old teammates in matches that involve around 20 teams across the University.

The Saturday night Winton Party provides one more chance to celebrate with friends and teammates alike. Tickets to the Winton Party are on sale here.

Student Listeners Wellbeing Café

The café will be back every Wednesday afternoon from 2-4pm in the lounge (level 2 of the King Alfred Centre). Join us, your Student Listeners, and our weekly guests including Mars the Therapy Dog as we offer free crafts and activities. Take a break from study and get a free hot drink from the Terrace Bar when you come along.

There’s no need to book, just show up and get stuck in. Keep an eye on our Instagram @Winch_SU to see what’s on each week!

Students’ Union Advice Centre

Our Advice Centre is here to help you navigate any challenges you may be having with your university experience. We can support you in any academic, wellbeing, housing, or money issues, or help you work out who’s best to speak to.

All current students can access the Advice Centre by completing our short Advice Enquiry Form on our website https://www.winchesterstudents.co.uk/advice or, pop by our offices for more information.

Commercial

We have lots of exciting things coming up in term two across our venue.  Don’t miss out on our Terrace/Lounge offerings including exclusive drink deals, LIVE TNT Sports Football showings, pool table, darts board and our photobooth!

The SU and West Downs shops are back from Friday 19th January, and yes, your favourites are waiting but there’s more to come including brand-new deals, meal deals and chilled food at West Downs – all essentials to make your life that little bit easier on campus.
