We are absolutely over the moon to be able to say that no rent will be payable from 27th March 2020 for those leaving, and those having to stay for any reason will receive a 50% discount on the payment!

This waiver and discount covers anyone who lives in on campus accommodation and University Managed Housing. At the moment, the University needs to confirm details with the operators of Cathedral Point and Riverside Way accommodation, who hold contracts with those students directly. Students in those residences should receive a holding email from Housing shortly, and confirmation should come over the next week. The Housing department at the University will be getting in touch with students in on campus accommodation in the coming days, so please remain patient but do look out for an email from them!

The Student Union and the University are also looking to work together to assist students who’s belongings remain in their accommodation, whether that be International and Domestic students. We will be looking to make arrangements for these students, and see how we will be able to help them.

The Vice Chancellor and I are also going to write a collaborative letter to private landlords, letting agents and PSRB providers in Winchester, imploring them to release students from their tenancy agreements and freeze rent. We are also hoping to get local MP, Steve Brine, involved with the letter too. We feel that working together in this will have the best outcome for our students.

Undoubtedly, many of you will have questions on this. I know the University are responding to people currently, and we will be trying our best to do the same. We just ask that you bear with us whilst we get all of the answers – we will get there in the end!

I am sure you are all aware that the Student Union Officers have pushed really hard for this over the last few weeks, working constantly to get the right outcome. We are all so very very happy to be able to make this announcement, and that the right decision has been made for the good of many students at the University of Winchester. I am very proud of how our student body have come together for this outcome, and I feel privileged (if not a little stressed!) to have been the one fighting your corner.

Thank you for your continued support, now and always.

Megan – President
