Here at Winchester Student Union, we understand the stress of the current cost of living crisis. We’ve put together fortnightly spotlights with tips and tricks to help save your pennies.

Have you tried playing Student’s Come Dine with Me? It’s a great way to have a laugh, save some pennies, and spend time with friends.

Most people have seen or heard of the TV show Come Dine With me. Whilst it’s funny and light-hearted, it could save you some money. Say for example you play with a group of 5 friends over one week, you would only cook (and pay for) one meal that week.

For those of you who haven’t seen the show, or have but can’t remember how it works, here’s how to play.

It can be done with your friend group or house mates. Each person takes a turn and, for one night, cooks dinner for the group. They’ll be known as the host. Everyone else, the guests, get to enjoy a free meal (which can be as many courses as you decide), then scores the host out of 10.

The next night it’s someone else’s turn to be the host, they show off their cooking skills and get scored by the guests. You can play for a week and have everyone take their turn within the week, or play for longer and spread it out over a month.

To make things even more interesting, the hosts can provide entertainment for bonus points in between courses. The catch is that they have to preform the entertainment! This could be singing a song, showing off a dance, stand-up comedy or sharing a hidden talent. What ever comes to mind could earn you extra points on your evening. The guests will watch you entertain them, and then decide how many bonus points to give you out of 5.

Once everyone has played host, the scores are added up and the host with the most points is declared the winner!! We’ll leave it up to you to decide whether to include prizes, or have the winner walk away with the gratification of winning.

Happy dining!
