Steve Vear was appointed an External Trustee of the Student Union in 2014 having been supporting the University Cricket team as a match official since 2005 and runs the indoor cricket league in Winchester in which the team participates each winter.


Steve works for a UK exam board as a member of the Operations Senior Leadership team having previously worked in the IT industry for 17 years. Steve was previously Chairman of the Trustees at his local Samaritan branch where he still volunteers as a trainer and listening volunteer. Alongside this Steve is the Chairman of the Southern Premier Cricket League, which is the top recreational cricket league in the county and serves as Chairman of Discipline. Steve is also an active Governor at Limington House School in Basingstoke, which is a special needs school offering education to those with profound and multiple disabilities across the curriculum. Steve sits on and chairs the schools resources committee.


In 2010 Steve was appointed a Magistrate for the North Hampshire Bench where he is currently serving as Bench Chairman being responsible for the pastoral care of around 120 magistrates. He sits in Basingstoke and Aldershot Magistrate Court in both the adult and family court. He even finds time to present a weekly radio show for a local community radio station.


Steve is also a qualified coach and a keen public speaker, being awarded the Distinguished Toastmaster award by Toastmasters International in 2018


In recognition of his voluntary service to Hampshire Steve was made an MBE by Her Majesty The Queen in the 2019 New Year’s Honors.


Steve brings extensive commercial and leadership knowledge to the board, as well as many years experience in charity governance and volunteer leadership and development. As part of his responsibility on the board he is the supervising trustee for SU disciplinary matters.
