Winchester Marrow is a student run volunteer group at the University of Winchester, as well as part of a wider network of Marrow groups (Over 60) in UK universities.
Throughout the semester donor recruitments are run on campus and in local schools and colleges, at least twice a semester. A donor recruitment is where people aged 16-30 years of age can do a cheeky swab and fill in a form to join the stem cell register. This is a registry of remarkable people who have a 1 in 100 chance of matching one-on-one with someone with a blood cancer such as leukaemia. If a match, these people go on to donate stem cells in a process similar to giving blood. Often a stem cell transplant is a patient’s last hope for a cure, so the work the society do with Anthony Nolan is vital to fighting blood cancers and disorders.
The society also run exciting fundraisers and social events throughout the year, with opportunities to get involved in events with other Marrow groups! Last year we ran a very successful ABBA night which helped us in raising funds for Anthony Nolan.
Students involved with Winchester Marrow will receive in-depth training prior to any events from a dedicated committee of other students, as well as supplies such as a t-shirt to make you feel part of the team. The society also acknowledge that students have busy lives, and so are to flexible to accommodate their members’ time. By joining Winchester Marrow, you are not only joining a family of likeminded individuals, but a network of driven students who have the power to make change – an incredible rewarding opportunity in itself.
