Winchester Student Union supports & runs The University of Winchester's sports teams. Involvement in extra-curricular activities offers great opportunity for fitness building and fun/interest, as well as personal development opportunities for volunteer organisers. Winchester currently boasts an impressive 17 teams playing in BUSA.
BUSA is the British Universities Sports Association and means our teams represent us against teams as far away as Plymouth & Cardiff. Winchester currently has five Football teams (four Men's and one Women's), three Netball teams, Men's Rugby and Rugby 7's, Men's & Women's Basketball teams, Men's & Women's Hockey teams, Men's & Women's Volleyball teams, Men's Tennis, Men's Squash, and Cricket. There are also individual championships where students have represented us - such as in Boxing. In the 2005/06 season Winchester won their first ever BUSA points thanks to Women's Basketball dominating their league! We are expanding rapidly in our competitive leagues, which is great news for the university.
Most of our other sports teams participate in the Southern England Student Sports Association (SESSA). SESSA sees the teams participate all over the South Eastern region of the country, playing in and around the London area and travelling as far as East Anglia. Winchester is also a founding member of SUSC which is a collective group of local southern based universities that compete in competitions that take place after the BUSA and SESSA seasons finish. In 2006-07 we were involved in BUSA, SESSA, SUSC & also great one-off Varsity day matches commenced for first time in our history (see some photos on the gallery pages).
The Student Union provides students with facilities beneficial to the development of clubs and societies - offering support for planning and organising activities and travel, help with finding sponsorship, funding, and training for organisers.
