So you’ve got your ‘to do’ list for getting to uni – 1) Unpack your boxes – tick, 2) Meet your flatmates – tick, 3) Find the SU bar – tick, but have you got your insurance yet?
Let’s face it, insurance is one of the duller things in life that you’d rather not spend your money on, but given how keen burglars are to target both halls of residence and student properties off campus, it’s important to make sure you’ve got cover to protect you should the worst happen. According to the Home Office, young people aged 16 – 24 are 3 times more likely to be victims of burglary than people in other age groups and 1 in 3 students is a victim of crime.
So take a second to think about how much you own – you might not think it’s that much, but if you add up the cost of everything you have – laptop, iPod, TV, mobile, clothes, it’s probably far more than you think. Research by Endsleigh Insurance Services Ltd shows that the average student owns belongings of over £6,000 - that’s a lot of money to find if you need to replace everything, but think how lost you’d be if you didn’t have your laptop to check Facebook or your mobile to text your new friends.
Insurance isn’t as expensive as you might think, you can get insurance with Endsleigh from just £16 a year – that’s less per month than a Starbucks coffee (and lasts much longer!) There are flexible online cover options too, so you can pick and mix your cover depending on what you need – you can even just cover a £400 laptop from only £24 for the whole year, so it’s no wonder they’re recommended by NUS.
What’s important to remember is that as a student you need to get insurance that’s designed for you and your lifestyle. Some students are under the impression that they are covered under their parents insurance - this is not always the case and there are often many limitations to being insured this way. By taking out insurance designed especially for students, you know that you’ll be covered for things like walk in theft (theft when burglars haven’t forced doors or windows), which many non student policies don’t cover.
