Union Council is the supreme committee of the Student Union. The 'UC' is larger and in many ways more powerful than the Executive Team. Please see the links to the left for more info on the Council and pages from your representatives. The Union Council is made up by elected students who represent specific areas of the student population as opposed to the executive members who look after more broad and inclusive areas involved in the Student Union. For example on Union Council we have a Mature Students Representative, a Societies Representative and a LGBT Representative, each of these elected people represents their community, whereas on the Executive you have an Academic Affairs Officer, a Welfare Officer who looks after these areas.

What do Union Council members do?

It is the role of the Union Council to feedback the views of the wider student body to the Student Union; this plays a pivotal role when deciding policy and best practice for the student body. Without this feedback, it is difficult to know that the work the Student Union is carrying out is actually what is 'best' for students. The Union Council can also mandate the Executive Team to carry out certain tasks; because the Union Council is essentially the Executive Team's boss (the Union Council could give the Executive an order and then "Exec" will then carry it out and make the decisions required to get the job done.
