Student Union Statement: Strike Action Thursday 10th May

The University and College Union (UCU) are striking tomorrow on Thursday 10th May. Our lecturers and University support staff are joining millions of other public sector workers across the country in defence of public services and pensions justice.

However, although we support the Strike in principle and have regularly showed solidarity and supported strike action held by UCU, the Student Union have always stressed that the Student experience is our priority and we could never support an action which jeopardises a student’s ability to progress or graduate. As this strike action occurs on a day of examinations for many students,…

Attack on a Student:

A female student was attacked and possibly sexually assaulted in Stanmore Lane on Wednesday 29 February between 10.30 and 11.30pm, near the New Queen’s Head pub and the Winchester Family Church.

The University and the Student Union are liaising with the Police who are also appealing for possible witnesses. The student was wearing a brown leather jacket and green skirt. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Laurie Firman at North Walls Police Station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Fortunately, such incidents are rare in Winchester but please take care when out at night…

Cheeky Update...

MEET YOUR OFFICERS!

A common problem at the Student Union is the communication between us, as officers and you, the students. Each year we try and combat this problem by holding forums, sending out newsletters such as these and through social networks such as facebook and twitter. However, the most effective idea in finding out what’s on your mind and what we can do to improve is actually going out and speaking to you in person. This is where our new ‘GOATing’ (Going out and Talking) mission comes in!

Over the next few weeks, myself and Jonny (and maybe some…

Fresher's 2011

Whatever you think about students, there’s no denying that their presence in Winchester has a profound effect on the city. I like to believe that these eager young adults, treading the path towards a degree education, add a certain vibrancy, enthusiasm and energy to our city. During the summer months I’m sure that many of our businesses and organisations lament their absence and wait eagerly for their return. This is certainly how we feel at Winchester Student Union; an organisation whose entire purpose is representing the Students of the University of Winchester and providing them with social, extracurricular and sporting…
