Hey guys!

Hey guys, my name is Jonny and I am your Participation and Volunteering officer for this year! First let me say a biiiiig hello to all you second, third and fourth years returning to us and you Freshers heading our way in September. Me and the Exec team are currently very busy ensuring Freshers fortnight and the rest of the year is bigger and better than anything you’ve seen before! There will be lots of opportunities to get involved with the Student Union and the activities we offer - I’m sure we’ll have something to tickle your fancy.

I remember in my first year uni veterans told me to sign up to as much as possible and to try everything -This is EXACTLY what you should do!

We as students might not like to admit it but we do have quite a lot of free time, and when it comes to getting a job companies are gonna want to know what you did with your spare time besides ‘studying’. Volunteering is a great answer to this question, it’s a great way to meet new friends and by giving it a go you might find it’s something you actually enjoy. There are organisations out there that are desperate for people like you who can’t afford to give much money but are willing to lend their time to help a good cause. Sport teams and Societies are also a great way of keeping fit and meeting a new group of friends that I guarantee will become friends for life.

At the end of the day though, it’s up to you to get the most out of your university experience. Don’t be afraid to give something a go and remember everyone is in the same boat, you can’t score if you don’t shoot!

When you come to uni you hear a lot of ‘buzz’ words, things like community, experience, spirit and family. From my time at Winch I know these phrases couldn’t be truer and if you disagree I’ll ask you again in a years time and let’s see if you’ve changed your mind!

Thank you, much love and goodnight!
                                          Biz x.
