University Mental Health and Wellbeing Day: February 19th 2014

Do you have a mental health? We all do. So let’s look after it!

University Mental Health and Wellbeing Day is an annual event aimed at promoting the mental health of people who study or work in Higher Education, as well as helping to break down the stigmas and end mental health discrimination.

On Wednesday 19th February 2014 we will be offering advice and support at the Student Union to get you thinking about your mental health and how you can take care of it.

Before you say “I haven’t got the time”, consider that we all have the same number of hours in the day. Devoting time each day to activities which promote mental health and well-being can lead to improvements in:

•your overall level of wellbeing

•effective time management

•meeting the demands of study and student life

•your ability to fulfil your academic potential

Here is a few simple things you can keep on top of to start look after your mental health:

•Exercise - boost your mood and keep active

•Rest - try to establish a good sleep pattern – not too little or too much. Aim for at least seven hours sleep per night

•Relax - identify what helps you relax and make time for it

•Socialising, hobbies and interests - find time to make and see friends

•Food and Mood - eat well and drink sensibly

•Take a break

It’s worth the investment!

Here is what we are doing on Wednesday to promote healthy mental wellbeing:

Level 3 of the University Centre 10:30 -3pm

•             Mindapples Tree – The “5-a-day” for your mind. Come down and share with us what you do for your wellbeing such as sleep, music, seeing friends or taking a walk.

•             Pledges – We’re encouraging students to pledge what they would like to do to improve mental health and wellbeing, to learn more about mental health, or to do more for their own mental wellbeing.
