With just over a week to go until Freshers Fortnight, the excitement is certainly building up and we cannot wait for everyone to arrive! We have so many events on offer, both daytime and evening (check out our calendar if you haven’t done so!) and the University also has a number of activities taking place in Welcome Week.

Freshers Fortnight is a great opportunity to see what your Student Union has to offer and also to meet so many different people, and whilst we encourage you to get involved, it is also important that you look after yourself. Here are a few tips to help you through Freshers…

  1. It’s okay to not drink…

Don’t feel like drinking alcohol? That is absolutely fine! If you’re attending one of our events and you’re just feeling thirsty, our bars offer a wide range of soft drinks and water is always free and readily available!

  1. Take an evening or two to relax…

Sometimes a night in is well needed. Starting university is hugely exciting, but it can be draining at the same time. If you still want to socialise, perhaps have a film night with your flatmates and course mates.

  1. Get to know people…

Winchester may be a small place, but there are still so many people to meet while you’re here. Make sure you get to know your housemates if you’re living in halls, and make time to get to know your course mates – you’ll spending the next three years with them after all!

  1. Attend Freshers Fayre…

This is a great opportunity to sign up for sports teams and societies and to engage with your Student Union. Come to campus on Saturday 19th September to find out more about the activities on offer – and get free Domino’s!

  1. Find your way around campus…

Familiarising yourself with campus will help you to settle in quickly. Visit the library, go find out more about Student Services and come say hello to your Student Union exec team on Level 3 of the University Centre. If you need to get somewhere but don’t know where it is, just ask!

  1. Work out your budget…

Coming to university is one of the best experiences you will have, but it is also an expensive one. Create a budget for yourself, work out how much you want to spend and when you can save! Get yourself an NUS Extra card, which will get you cheaper entry into our events and many discounts elsewhere, and it is also a form of verified student I.D.

  1. Keep up to date with the Student Union…

Whilst you can find out all sorts of information on our website, you can keep up to date with the latest news on all of our social media channels…

  1. Pick up some healthy habits…

It’s important to look after yourself – Eat, sleep, drink (water), repeat! Taking care of yourself means you won’t burn yourself out before term has even begun!

  1. Stay safe…

Look out for yourself and others – don’t go out on your own at night, get to know the safe places in Winchester, know your limits when it comes to alcohol.  We want you to feel safe at Winchester, and you should know that the Student Union and Student Services are here to support you.

  1. Have fun!

Enjoy Freshers Fortnight and beyond! This is your university experience. There are a lot of opportunities to take up, a lot of studying to be done and a lot of memories to be made, so make the most of your time at the University of Winchester and Winchester Student Union.

Remember, you can always come and chat to us at the Student Union, whether you want to get involved, get some advice or just say hello! You can find us in our offices on Level 3 of the University Centre, next to the Food Hall, or you may see us around on campus. Stay safe, look after yourself and have fun whilst you’re with us in Winchester.
