Officer Video Interviews

First of all, welcome back! It’s that time of the semester to sit back, relax and start cracking on with the next load of assignments. But do you know what you really need? A slightly awkward man on camera asking odd questions to a bunch of people wearing green.

Yes. Yes you do.

My name is Harry Sampson, your friendly neighbourhood Communications Officer, and today I’ll be talking about the upcoming Exec Video Interviews coming out later today.

Fresher’s Fortnight saw all our green-uniformed Exec Officers and many fantastic orange-shirted Fresher’s Crew helping out with everything from unloading bags to chatting in the queue for Bop, to even showing off some impressive (and somewhat dire) dance moves. As the Communications Officer, I think it’s certainly about time to make sure all of us know who the Officers are; from me right on down to the President! Not only does it help us all to know who to turn to in times of joy or crisis, or who to ask about getting involved, but it is also a vital part of our Student Union democracy. You guys should keep us on our toes, constantly dancing to the tune of student engagement and exciting opportunities for all.

So what was the best way to do this? Posters? The Comms Board? A vigorous baked-bean-soaking in front the Stripe?
Thankfully sensibility prevailed and I remembered something a friend told me a while ago:

“The entire art of comedy is merely the act of laughing at the misfortune of other people.”

So I decided to lure our Officers to the SU meeting room and capture their responses on video instead.

Of course I couldn’t have done this all by myself. Besides lacking any video experience, not to mention a camera, I relied upon the help of a few other students. Chief among them was Katie Chapple, video editor extraordinaire, who kindly provided the camera and edited the videos so that my stiff performance isn’t too disheartening.

The questions remain pretty much the same and I seem to retain the same bleak and glum look throughout the entire series, but that was done for the sake of consistency (totally not because I’m awful in front of the camera and couldn’t think of any other questions).

I’m expecting to have a few queries about why there is an odd question about bananas at the end of each video, but I assure you it has a purpose. Besides as a reference to my love of Monty Python, but you’ll also have to wait for the final video with the President to find out why we went through the trouble of building up the longest joke in SU history.
Anyway, I would like to think you all enjoy the upcoming video interviews soon to be posted by the SU on social media – but what I really hope is for us all to know more not only about our SU Officers, but what they can do for you.

P.S. Don’t forget to keep your eyes open for the much longer, more exciting and more professional Sound TV interviews coming later in the semester!
