Hi, my name is Harry Sampson and I’m your Student Union President – this is call to all current Winchester Students!

#WinchFreshers16 is coming along this September and there is a lot to organise before all the excitement kicks off for our renowned Fresher’s Fortnight! If you are a current University of Winchester student, like wearing orange and want to be a part of the interesting welcoming process, look no further (well, apart from the rest of this article).

Many of you, we hope, will be able to remember your first Fresher’s Fortnight experiences – the odd mixture of excitement and homesickness combined with a sense of delight for your new, slightly terrifying, university career.

This is why we are looking for enthusiastic, friendly and approachable students to volunteer to join our dedicated orange-t-shirt-wearing Fresher’s Crew. Whether you have volunteered before or not, this is a great experience that provides numerous opportunities. From welcoming new students to the University to demonstrating your undoubtedly awesome dance moves to encourage a great atmosphere at our many nights out, Fresher’s Crew fulfils a wide range of responsibilities to ensure a great time for all.

We aim to assist new and returning students with settling into university life, providing a friendly face that really goes beyond the call of duty to truly welcome students to Winchester.

Jordan Rudge, Vice President Activities, summarises this perfectly.

“Fresher’s Crew is definitely the forefront of the student welcoming experience, going above and beyond for their fellow students”.

Being in this position of responsibility means you will need to be available for a training day on Thursday 15th September, which covers many of the areas you are likely to encounter during the role. You will also need to be available from Saturday 17th September, when we will be moving students into Halls accommodation and conducting our first set of amazing events for the week. Once your lectures get under way in the second week, the timetable will work around your academic timetable – so don’t worry about missing those lectures!

Sam Chivers, our Vice President Education, calls the dedicated work of the Fresher’s Crew “an integral part of the Fresher’s Fortnight Experience”. He is not wrong. Besides encouraging students to get involved in wonderful Winchester, there are a number of other areas Fresher’s Crew help with.

This includes being a positive ambassador on behalf of your Union, helping with the issuing of NUS cards, wearing a noticeable orange t-shirt, queue management and promotion, as well as occasional reception work and tour guiding. Volunteering for Fresher’s Crew not only provides you with excellent opportunities to make new friends, but also a boost to your CV (also incentives and rewards that are detailed at training!).

If you application is successful, you will receive an email within a week of the closing date (Sunday 31st July) – so remember to fill it in before then!

We at your Student Union look forward to hearing from you and reading your application. Fresher’s Fortnight is going to be a blast – volunteer and have the experience of a lifetime!

P.S. Did I mention you get to wear an orange t-shirt?
