Coffee House Session - Jack Conman

Thanks for coming and performing at the University of Winchester today. How did it go?

Yeah, great thanks. It was nice support and I much preferred the close feel of the bar area to other venues I've performed where I felt much more separated and isolated from the audience. It was nice.

You are only 18 – When did you decide that music was going to be your full time career?

Well I dunno really. I was in college and people were filling out UCAS forms and I just felt that it wasn't for me. So they all went off to uni and I started writing and performing. No regrets. It's great because it means I can spend time writing and performing which is what I love and didn't really get time to do before.

You draw your influences from contemporaries such as Ben Howard and Jon Gomm – How would you define your style?

I dunno really.... haha I mean I hate using the word but I guess Indie? Hate to be called that because it's got a different meaning behind it but probably indie.

We loved your unique tapping style and we know you used to be a drummer – Did they naturally lend itself to the guitar ‘tapping’ that you demonstrated throughout your set? How did you come about doing that?

Well I was messing about with friends. I haven't really drummed in a few years but it's a bit like riding a bike; you don't forget it. So we were messing about and I started just drumming on the guitar and they said it sounded good. So it came naturally and I kept it up.

Your debut EP ‘Euphoria Springs’ is released this month – How long did it take you to rite? What is the process behind your song writing?

Well it began with writing the songs, which took a couple months I guess. Then recording went well and now we're out touring it and its being released soon. It kinda went pretty quick I guess. Not years but not a week. But it's great because the label let me flog a few before it's released. Just hoping that it isn't pirated before release!

What else are you up to over the coming months?

Well I'm just starting this tour and I'm travelling up and down the country, going all the way up to St Andrews and all the way down here which is all a long way from home [Hull]. Then I'm going to go off and write some more music and get a new EP out over the next coming months, which is exciting.

For people who want to find out more info about your music, where could they find it?

Facebook I guess? I'm also on twitter, iTunes and Spotify so all people need to do is search Jack Conman and they'll find me!
